3 out 4 beer batches were still good!

So last October 20th I brewed 4 5Gal beer batches in a row.  I really didn’t even finish in the same day.  Anyways, I got busier and busier with work and kept putting it off to keg them.  It then go really cold and I didn’t want to freeze outside while trying to clean kegs and figured that it’d be cold enough that it would suspend the yeast so that the beer wouldn’t get ruined over the winter.  Well, today a friend of mine and myself kegged all four batches.  We tasted them all too.

Pilsner, Hefe, and the IPA were all great.  Flat, but still good.  They tasted how they should without carbination and didn’t give off any funny flavors.  The stout on the other hand was.. well..  rancid.  It first smelled like rotten millk, to me at least my friend didn’t smell it like that.  We each took a mouth full, swished it around and swallowed.

Wyeast – Irish Ale Yeast #1084

Striked this mash at 75C.  Went to check temperature several times and noticed the water level had dropped and there wasn’t water covering the top of the grains.  Filled it up with 70C water each time, but struggled to keep the water up top.  I think i had too many grains in the new masher because there was a point where if i filled it anymore i couldn’t put the lid on.  I don’t think i can put anymore than 12lbs of grain in the coolers.  I’ll need to experiment to find out.  I will probably brew again this Sunday.

Sparged at 70C.  I think i ended up with a bit more water than i wanted.  I thought i would have boiled off more.  Ended up with a 6gal batch instead of a 5gal.

Last two batches bottled

Just finished bottling my last two batches around midnight.  Everything clean and put away too.  Also saved all of my yeast.  Will need to get some bigger containers to help continue with the wash though.  Here’s a picture of all my bottled beer though.

Bottled Beer!

So I finally bottled my first batch of beer.  Hopefully it doesn’t taste bad by now since the wait was longer.  Really doubt that.  Was able to get 33 bottles from this batch.  I used some regular 12oz, 16oz and 22oz bottles.

Side note, my other two batches are probably done sooner than expected and i could bottle those up this weekend.  Speaking of this weekend, I’ll probably mash and start another brew. Just need Jon to build his new mill so I can use it! :D

My first mash with two brews!

So I brewed up two batches of beer this weekend.  I did a Stout and a Hefeweizen.  Once I am done, I plan on naming the brew and adding them to the recipe section of my blog but until then, here ya go.

Stout:

  • 6# 2Row
  • 1# 6row
  • 1# Roasted Wheat
  • 1# Torrefied Wheat
  • 1# Oats
  • .5# Black
  • .5# Barley
  • 2.5oz East Kent @ 60min
  • .5oz East Kent @ 30 min
  • 1oz Sterling @ 10min
  • Wyeast – Irish Ale

Hefeweizen:

  • 5# 2Row
  • 2# 6Row
  • 2# DWC Wheat
  • 1# Roasted Wheat
  • 1# Torrefied Wheat
  • 1# Oats
  • 1oz Nugget @ 60min
  • .25oz Cascade @ 60min
  • 1oz Sterling @ 20min
  • .5oz Sterling @ 5min
  • Wyeast – London III (Large batch because i reused it from my very first 2 brews that were extract)

Both were mashed the same way.  I heated the water up and began the mash at 70C.  I let them sit for one hour.  Rinsing I used hot tap water, which I will not do next time.  My OG for both was 1.041.  Not very good, probably due to my rinsing process.
